Reformatted my desktop and now the internet download speed is REALLLY SLOW and signal strength is excellent?
Windows XP. I just reformatted my desktop because it got messed up and the computer and internet worked perfect and fast. After about a day the download speed became extremely slow. I can't even open up a regular website in under a minute. My other computers are right next to it and share the same internet and are still very fast. Any ideas why this computer is rediculously slow still?

- Try a VIRUS scan & see if you find anything. Usually new formatted systems are very vulnerable to new attacks because there are so many Windows updates needed to protect from external programs. In addition to your VIRUS scan you may also want to use another program called Spybot Search & Destroy, it's free. It searches for malware/popup & also immunizes future attacks from know viruses & programs.
- well since you reformatted, there is still a chance that you didnt install of the drivers that it once had, so update the computer first, install the lates video drivers and network drivers and you might see it work again
- Hard drive fragmentation is a major cause of slowness. Fragmentation is created as files are created, edited or as files and programs are downloaded, they get broken up and saved wherever free space is available. Then the computer has to work extra hard to restore and open or run these files and programs. The same happens when it tries to download a file to a serverly fragmented disk, there is no solid free space, so it take s a long time. As it gets worse it can cause, slows, program hangs, freezes, crashes etc. Defrag your computer. Diskeeper is a great product www.diskeeper.com
- 1. Scan your computer with Antivirus. Maybe a virus or trojan hide in your computer. One of my choice is AVG, its free. Get here: http://softcluster.net/anti-virus-security/anti-virus/avg-anti-virus-free-80-build-176a1400/ 2. Check again your internet setting or modem. 3. If your connection still slow, download CFOSSPEED to maximize your internet connection. Download here: http://softcluster.net/internet-network/network-tools/cfosspeed-425-build-1449/
