Is "Tracks Eraser Pro" a good tool to over ride index.dat file and protect banking informatiom?

- elaborate on the banking software and index.dat file... I'm guessing your using some software like quicken? I think the data files are already encrypted but if you were Super paranoid you could create a virtual drive using truecrypt and install the entire program into that drive. Then save all of your data files into it. Just remember to make backups and put them in a fireproof vault or something because if you lose your password not even god can get the information back. If you're talking about some kinda web software... I guess if you were super paranoid there use a "file-eraser" type program to repeatedly erase and write over your temporary internet files and cookies every time you visit the site... Although that's some pretty super overkill. It's like buying a jet to avoid the speed bumps at work. Overall the best idea to protect data is to encrypt it the first time it hits your hard drive. Truecrypt works well for that because it acts as a drive on your computer. When your machine writes information from ram it gets encrypted immediately. Best of all it's a free program. This way you don't have to clean up after yourself. If anyone was to do a physical copy or take a serious look at your hard drive they couldn't find out what was there in the first place.... no matter what.
- You can securely delete index.dat files with CCleaner which is free http://www.ccleaner.com go to options>settings and select secure deletion - 1, 3 or 7 pass There are several good programs like Tracks Eraser Pro such as Window Washer (Webroot) and Cyberscrub Professional - they will provide you with additional features
